Example to calculate the price with VAT:

Imagine you need to calculate the final price of a product whose base cost is 1,000 euros and a VAT of 21% is applied. To calculate VAT on an amount we proceed as follows:

  • Base amount: 1,000 euros
  • VAT type: 21%
  • How to proceed:
    1. Enter “1000” in the amount box in the online calculator.
    2. Select the tax type at 21%, which is the common value in many countries.
    3. Choose the option “Calculate price with VAT” to get the total with the tax added.
  • Calculation:
    • The VAT rate amount is calculated as: 1,000 x 21% = 210 euros.
    • The total price, including VAT, will be: 1,000 + 210 = 1,210 euros.

Example to calculate the price without VAT

If you have a total amount of 1,210 euros (with taxes) for having bought something and want to break it down to know how much corresponds to VAT:

  • Total amount (with VAT): 1,210 euros
  • VAT type: 21%
  • How to proceed:
    1. Enter “1210” in the amount box, which is the total value with VAT included.
    2. Select the VAT type at 21% for accurate calculation.
    3. Choose the option “Calculate price without VAT” to break down the tax and get the base amount.
  • Calculation:
    • The VAT rate amount is calculated as: 1,210 – (1,210 / 1.21) = 210 euros.
    • The base amount without VAT is: 1,210 / 1.21 = 1,000 euros.

How is VAT calculated?

Depending on the country, VAT (Value-added tax called in Spain, value-added tax or added value) can have different types. In Spain, for example, there are three main types: general (21%), reduced (10%), and super-reduced (4%).

To calculate the final price with VAT, you can follow these steps:

  1. Identify the VAT type: Find out what type of VAT applies to the product or service you want to buy.
  2. Convert the percentage to a decimal number: For example, 21% becomes 0.21.
  3. Multiply the price without VAT by the VAT decimal number and add it to the original price:
    • Example: If a product costs 100€ and has a VAT of 21%:
      • 100€ x 0.21 = 21€ (VAT)
      • 100€ + 21€ = 121€ (final price with VAT)

To calculate the final price without VAT, you can follow these steps:

If you already have the price with VAT included and want to know what the original price was, you can do the following:

  1. Divide the price with VAT by (1 + the VAT type in decimal):
    • Example: If a product costs 121€ with VAT included (21%):
      • 121€ / 1.21 = 100€ (price without VAT)
