Introduction to behavior-centered design course
The UN and other international organizations have embraced Behavior-Centered Design (BCD) as a tool in the fight against global issues like climate change. They understand that every little bit counts in this monumental task.
We know that human behavior can be the root of many environmental and ecological problems, but it is also the key to finding solutions.
So… What is Behavior-Centered Design (BCD)? It is a process that combines insights from behavioral science and the approach of design principles to develop innovative solutions to environmental threats.
The UN, through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launches the free online course on introduction to Behavior-Centered Design in the face of environmental challenges.
The conservation of nature is linked to the behavior of the daily actions and decisions of billions of people and communities
Course offered by UNDP
This online teaching is developed by the Center for Behavior and the Environment of RARE and the United Nations Development Programme, with the support of the Moore Foundation.
Note: UNDP is a virtual training platform on specialized knowledge in key thematic areas to facilitate the progress of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Main features of the course:
- The teaching is offered in both English and Spanish and starts next month.
- The introductory course is divided into ten modules and is a fully online training, open to everyone and at “your own pace”.
- If all the evolution requirements indicated in the course are met, an official and free certificate can be obtained.
Training objectives
In the learning, the eight steps of Behavior-Centered Design are explored from the perspective of the environmental challenge through different interactive activities and lessons.
- 1.- Acquire the ability to identify key behaviors and essential actors in relation to environmental challenges.
- 2.- Fundamental principles of Behavior-Centered Design along with the six dynamics for behavior transformation.
- 3.- Apply the knowledge and key points of behavior to design.
- 4.- Use the researched information to build a prototype solution that incorporates different stakeholders.
- 5.- Familiarize with the stages of testing, launching, and evaluating a behavior-based solution.
- 6.- Explain the relevance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in each stage of the Behavior-Centered Design methodology.
Course syllabus for Behavior-Centered Design (BCD)
The online training is divided into ten modules with the following stages:
- Module 1: Introduction and welcome to the course.
- Module 2: Frame: Frame the behavioral challenge.
- Module 3: Empathize: Understand the motivations and barriers of the main actors.
- Module 4: Map: Establish connections between behavioral science and data.
- Module 5: Ideate: Generate ideas for behavioral solutions.
- Module 6: Prototype: Create a small-scale prototype version of the solution.
- Module 7: Test: Test the solution and gather feedback on it.
- Module 8: Implement: Launch the solution.
- Module 9: Evaluate: Analyze and measure behavior change.
- Module 10: Summary of the training and next steps.
Requirements to obtain certification and enrollment
To obtain the learning certificate it is necessary to complete the 10 modules, pass the eight tests and an evaluation conducted at the end, plus respond to a final survey about the training.
The introductory course on Behavior-Centered Design (BCD) starts on July 1, 2023 and you can enroll from the UNDP Learning For Nature platform HERE. It is an instruction supported by the UN with a certificate, so it’s worth it!
