For our architecture projects, interior design, or design, sometimes it can be useful to convert a 2D image of a piece of furniture into a 3D model.

With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), tools are emerging that do a more than decent job of creating 3D furniture models quickly.

You can now convert a 2D image to 3D in less than a minute with amazing results!

1.- Prome AI for 3D

We have already talked a few times about PromeAI. A platform powered by artificial intelligence that offers a set of tools for generation, image editing, and rendering focused on the AI for architecture and design sector.

On its platform, you can upload 3D models in formats like .obj, .fbx, .stl, and .3ds, and use its “Sketch Rendering” tool to generate realistic renders from these files.

But it also allows 3D modeling based on a 2D image and does it easily! The process is:

1. Register: Enter PromeAI from HERE. We will have to register (It gives us some free credits to use the tool).
2. Find tool: Go to the “AI Tools” section and at the end of the options, we will see “AI 3D Model Generator”.
3. Generate 3D model: Now we just have to upload our 2D image. Preferably the object or furniture should have a white or transparent background (png) and click on “Generate render”.
4. View 3D and download: Once the model is generated, we can view it in 3D and download it in “.obj” file type including textures, if we are subscribed.

2.- Tripo 3D

The Tripo AI tool allows generating high-quality 3D models quickly from text, single or multiple images, and even from sketches.

We can do free trials and even download the 3D models without paying anything

Although it is designed more for creating three-dimensional elements for games, the models created have detailed geometries. The process is:

1. Register: We enter Tripo AI from HERE and at the top right “Try Tripo Web” (You have to register to generate 3D models).
2. Upload image: Go to the “Tripo web” section and upload the image you want to render in 3D. No need to put any “prompt” or indicate anything else.
3. Generate 3D model: To convert the photo to the 3D model you have to click on generate model, and view the modeling! It’s that simple!
4. Download 3D model: Download the model according to the file type you need; for example, for 3ds Max, 3D printing, or for Autocad by customizing the file type with “.obj”, and then converting it.

3.- Krea AI

The online application Krea AI is a tool that uses AI to facilitate the creation and enhancement of high-quality images or videos.

Among its options, there is the creation of 3D objects from a 2D photo. The process would be:

1. – Register: We enter the Krea AI application from HERE (with the free plan we can create different 3D models, even download them)
2. – Canvas cleaning: In the menu, we will go to Generate > Realtime. Here, we have to clean the scene:
   2.1 – Mark the elements that are there (circle and square) and delete.
   2.2 – From the left menu “Canvas Background” Change the scene background to a neutral color.
3. – Create 3D: Drag the image you want to convert to 3D onto the canvas. And now, on the image, right-click to see a submenu where “Convert to 3D” will be.
4. – Download file: Click again on the 3D model and right-click to download the file. The format is “.glb” suitable for Blender, 3ds Max, or Maya.

4.- Hunyuan 3D

This is an “open source” tool that we could even install on our computer if it is powerful. The advantage is that it is completely free on Huggingface from HERE. An example:

If you are not registered on Huggingface, it only allows very few tests. The download file is in “.glb” format suitable for Blender, 3ds Max, or Maya. Combined with artificial intelligence for interior design or AI tool for house plans it can be a great application!

5.- Hyper 3D

Another application specialized in 3D modeling mainly for objects, although with the image of our test sofa it yields decent results.

Can we achieve higher quality when converting an image to a 3D model?

Well, the direct answer is YES. But we have to delve into much more complex tools although the results are impeccable.
